Intermodal transportation is commonly referred to as the transportation of cargo or freight, usually in a containerized or otherwise standardized mechanism; which utilizes multiple forms of transport for delivery from origin to the final destination, and brings it back to its point of initiation.

Thus, generally speaking, this containerized cargo shall go via any available means to meet whatever requirement may be. Ocean, rail, road, and even air; we can imagine any commercially accessible techniques will make up the journey.
